Last Tuesday, at hotel Principe di Savoia in Milan, the 2015 Italian edition of the Michelin guide was unveiled. After the exclusive interview with editor in chief Sergio Lovrinovich, we have tried to sum up all the most significant numbers.

the number of Italian editions of the Red Guide. The first edition in 1956 was titled “Italia, dalle Alpi a Siena” [Italy, from the Alps to Siena], priced 1,000 lire and there were no starred restaurants.

the 2015 establishments, distributed over around 2,000 towns. There are 370 new entries compared to 2014.

the restaurants with at least one star. In the previous edition they were 329.

the restaurants promoted from 2 to 3 stars. The total is still 8: all the 3 stars in the 2014 edition were confirmed. 39 is the total of 2 starred restaurants, 285 are the restaurants with one star.

the restaurants promoted from one to two stars: Tavernia Estia in Brusciano (Naples), chef Francesco Sposito and Piccolo Principe inside hotel Principe di Piemonte di Viareggio (Lucca), chef Giuseppe Mancino, also from Naples.

downgraded restaurants from 2 to 1 star. Il Pellicano in Porto Ercole (Grosseto) and Il Desco di Verona. Il Rigoletto in Reggiolo (Reggio Emilia) is also out of the guide, 2 stars cancelled by the earthquake in Emilia in May 2012.

Tuscany is the most awarded region with 6 new stars (Le Tre Lune in Calenzano, La Bottega del Buon Caffè Bistrot, Winter Garden by Caino, L’Imbuto, Il Silene and La Torre). Lombardy follows with 5 (Iyo, first Japanese restaurant ever, Berton, Umami, Lido 84, Il Saraceno). 4 for Campania (Gennaro Esposito’s Mammà, Relais Blu, President and Il Flauto di Pan).

restaurants downgraded from 1 to 0 stars for a demerit or a change in the chef. Among them, Osteria di via Solata and Roof Garden in Bergamo, Al Castello in Grinzane (Cuneo), Symposium 4 stagioni in Cartoceto (Pesaro Urbino), Agata e Romeo in Rome, La Tenda Rossa in San Casciano, Pappacarbone in Cava de’ Tirreni, Scrigno del Duomo in Trento.

establishments that lost a star because they closed down: Le Busche in the Marche, Gener Neuv in Piedmont, La Locanda di Bu in Campania, Bacco in Apulia, Osteria del Mare in Emilia Romagna, Frankrizzuti in Basilicata and Palma in Liguria.

Since November 7th 2014 for the first time, for all the editions of the Michelin guide across the world, there will be a new free App of the guide. The next update will be in November 2015, on the occasion of the launch of the 61th edition.
