Should you ever cross paths with Giuseppe Zen, be ready: you’ll listen to him for hours. He has in him all or almost all the elements that lead to defining a person as volcanic; most of all he’s a person who lives his passion for food and raw materials every day in a profound way, communicating it in everything he does.

Originally from Veneto, he was born in Milan and chose to consider himself (mostly) Sicilian. But even though he has a home in Sicily where he goes as often as he can, the place where he works and has established himself with a very effective mix of tradition and innovation, of pop street food and gourmet attitude is his hometown.

At first it was Mangiari di Strada. A place which, starting from the name, brought back street food to Italy, giving it the most appropriate name. A restaurant as well as a perfect example of how food can be both slow and fast. In the hardly glossy neighbourhood of Lorenteggio this restaurant soon became a mecca for food lovers, offering a craveable and very fun mosaic of delicacies from Italian popular cuisine.

Traditional recipes interpreted with philological rigour and contemporary sensitivity: Bombette from Alberobello orPanino with lampredottoTripe orFried brainsMorzeddhu catanzanzarise or Cannolo siciliano with sheep’s milk ricotta from ModicaGiuseppe Zen offers interpretations easy to digest and please eyes and palate.

Yet this wasn’t enough. So Zen takes the opportunity of the renovations at Mercato della Darsena in Milan and opens the first Macelleria Popolare, where he only sells meat that is 100% grass-fed, cooked on the spot or take away, where the beef has a touching hanging process. Then in the same place there’s Panificio italiano, the smallest bakery in Europe with bread made on the spot, with highly selected wheat, and Formaggeria, which only sells cheese from raw milk. But we’re ready to bet that Giuseppe Zen is already thinking of a new delicious adventure.
