12.42 The One to watch award goes to Catalan Disfrutar. On stage, the three chefs Oriol Castro, Mateo Casañas and Eduard Xatruch. 12.37 The microphone goes to the sparkling Mark Durden Smith ("We couldn’t get in touch with Crocodile Dundee and Kylie Minogue is too petite", jokes Drew): "Will Massimo Bottura be always at number one?". The suspense begins. 12.19 THE CEREMONY BEGINS. William Drew, mister World's 50 Best (here’s an interview with him from a few days ago). "It all started in 2002 as a simple idea at Restaurant Magazine, but it soon got out of hand and became a global phenomenon. On 27th June in Barcelona we’ll have a big party, and a debate, with all the winners from these first 15 years. As for the after-party, later, the deejays will be the chefs from Clove Club in London. I’d like to thank all the sponsors, the Academy members who voted this year, and the 47 chefs out of the first 50 who are with us tonight, a number that makes me very proud". noon With a fifteen minute “academic” delay, the countdown from the 50th to the 1st place will being. "Take your seat", recommends the production. As Paolo Marchi tells us from Melbourne, there are 950 people in the audience, what with chefs, journalists and enthusiasts.
11.44 The countdown before the live streaming on finedininglovers.com is about to begin: 16 minutes to go.
11.32 A touching moment before the ceremony begins: the 4 Italian chefs in the 50Best - Alajmo, Crippa, Romito and Bottura – remember Bob Noto with a smile. The creative artist and gourmet passed away a few days ago.
11.15 The traditional photo at the Royal Exhibition Building with the first chefs arriving. These include Gaggan Anand, Yannick Alleno, Elena Arzak, Eneko Atxa, Dan Barber, Mauro Colagreco, Dominique Crenn, Rodolfo Guzmàn, Virgilio Martinez, Heinz Reitabuer and host Ben Shewry. Danish Rene Redzepi is not here. Four times at number one, in the past, he closed his Noma a few weeks go and will open again in 2018 in a new location in Copenhagen. 11.00 Will Spain, 7 restaurants in the 2016 World's 50Best 2016, will once again be the nation with the most restaurants in the list? Or will it be the US (6 restaurants in 2016)? Italy will have 4 restaurants while Peru, Denmark and France will start from the 3 in 2016.
10.47 Another thing’s for sure: there will be four restaurants among the first 50: Osteria Francescana in Modena (first place in 2016), Piazza Duomo in Alba (17th in 2016), Le Calandre in Rubano, Padua (39th). A big leap is also expected from Reale-Casadonna in Castel di Sangro, 84th last year: will it be the highest climber in 2017?
10.40 The location for the ceremony is the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne, inside the Carlton Gardens. In 1901 the Australian parliament had its first session here. People begin to enter following the red carpet, like at the Academy Awards. 10.35 Three things are sure, to begin with: the Lifetime achievement award goes to British Heston Blumenthal; the World's best female chef award goes to Slovenian Ana Roš and the One to watch award goes to Catalan Disfrutar.
10.00 Two hours before the ceremony begins, many food lovers take their place in front of the big screens in Federation Square, in central Melbourne.
